VR Creates Meaning for Critical Care Patient
After collaborating with East Kent Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (EKH) on their award-winning training drama, Flix VR was invited by Dr. Chris Farnham to provide a critically ill patient with a unique VR experience. A passionate sports enthusiast, the patient had suffered a catastrophic cycling accident and was on life support. As he chose to have his ventilator switched off, his family and clinical team wanted to honour his adventurous spirit with VR bucket list experiences.
Despite the challenges of the ICU environment, Flix worked with the patient’s wife and daughter to deliver immersive experiences like skiing, surfing, and swimming with dolphins. The family shared these moments through a separate screen. A deeply moving moment came when the patient selected a VR experience for his wife by blinking. He chose “Sunrise on the Serengeti,” allowing her to enjoy the scene while he watched. This emotional experience highlighted the power of VR in creating meaningful connections and memories. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Farnham and EKH for trusting us to bring comfort during such a sensitive time.
